How Smart Design Guided My Travels

During my recent journey through Rome, Italy and Méribel, France, I was struck by how great design transcends language barriers. Whether I was catching a flight, hopping on a train, or navigating city streets to find that next delicious gelato spot, smart design guided me every step of the way.
Here are three key moments where design spoke louder than words:
- From airport terminals to European train stations, clear visuals and intuitive icons helped me find my way. Whether I was navigating Munich or Zurich airports for connecting flights or boarding a train in Italy, signage ensured I always knew:
- ✅ Where to go to catch my flight, train, bus, shuttle or taxi
- ✅ Which carriage car and seat were assigned to us
- ✅ Where to store our luggage without blocking the aisles
- Renting a Lime scooter in a foreign city could have been frustrating, but the seamless app design and color-coded maps made it incredibly simple. With just a few taps, I could:
- ✅ Find an available scooter nearby
- ✅ Understand where it was allowed (and where it wasn’t)
- ✅ Know what direction we wanted to go
- Whether exploring the historic cobblestone streets of Rome or the ski slopes of Méribel I saw how bold colors, icons, and shapes made navigation instant and intuitive:
- 🇮🇹 Colored signage grabbed my attention while walking / scootering
- 🇫🇷 Ski slope markers told me which runs were best for my skill level
- ⚠️ Universal hazard signs ensured safety, no matter the language
Even without words, colors and icons created a universal understanding, making my travels smoother and more enjoyable.

Why It Matters
Just as thoughtful design made my travels seamless, it can also enhance your brand's user experience, leading to better engagement and satisfaction.
- Seeing is Believing: 93% of communication effectiveness comes from visual elements like colors, design, and symbols, making them far more impactful than text alone. In high-traffic environments like airports and transportation hubs, well-designed signage and wayfinding systems ensure travelers can quickly interpret information, reducing confusion and improving the overall passenger experience. - Intuitive UX: Lime’s scooter UX-driven approach led to record growth in 2024, with 200M+ rides (a 30% increase), 24M+ riders, and expansion to 280+ cities across 30 countries with 270,000+ vehicles. By making onboarding seamless and navigation intuitive, Lime continues to remove barriers and drive global adoption. (BusinessWire)
- The Power of Color: Research shows that 85% of people across different cultures respond similarly to certain color associations. The use of color in signage and design isn't just aesthetic—it's a universal language. (Pantone Color Institute)
